The Montessori philosophy of education and childhood development is at the heart of Kid O's physical space design and the selection of products. The low, open shelving allows children to feel comfortable interacting with the objects on display and with the scale of the space. We carry products that are well made and have some educational or imaginative component, following the teaching that a few, lasting toys with a multitude of uses and possibilities are much better for a child than a huge, and potentially overwhelming selection of toys.

Maria Montessori, one of the first female physicians in Italy, developed the Montessori teaching method starting in 1907 with her now famous "Children's house." Through close observation of a group of children, Montessori recognized their innate ability to guide their own educational process by initiating projects and setting their own pace. Within a "prepared environment" populated with objects that encourage direct and non-direct introduction to mathematical, scientific and language development, a child can shape the learning practices that are best suited to their needs and wants. From a very young age, Montessori taught us, children are fully capable of learning to respect their belongings, cleanliness and order as they develop an excitement about concentrating on projects and learning "with all five senses." Montessori developed materials to stimulate learning that are still used today across the world.
